What Goes Up..., by Dr. John Stover

Albert Einstein is well known for his theory of relativity; however, what is not well known is that a lot of very smart people think he made a mistake. An error in thinking that, among other things, may be responsible for our inability to explain the gravity force – something we interact with every day of our lives. Such a mistake could easily be responsible for this huge gap in our understanding of basic physics.

This book is an account of several people who, almost by accident, discover a way to distort gravity. They use this knowledge to first build a toy and then a small ship that essentially “falls” in the direction they wish to travel. They have adventures around the world - and beyond. Then as they prepare to go public with their discovery some real trouble starts - because if it is that easy to do, then it is a “leveling technology.” Powerful governments and companies (oil, aircraft, etc.) would suddenly find the world a very different place in which to compete, lead and dominate. The reaction is immediate and two of the five find themselves in a fight for their lives.

The story is brought to us anomalously by “Alan” who, choosing to remain in hiding, asks Stover to “author” the account of their discovery, their marvelous adventures and Alan’s final escape to freedom – to write the book. The story takes us from lab room to boardroom, around the globe and even into space. Whether you are fascinated by the science or not, you will find their adventures in Gossamer Wings, the all too realistic struggles with small company politics and the final conflict with a government crackdown to be both exciting and thought provoking.

A serious question is whether a mistake by Einstein has caused a problem in physics. Stover comments between chapters to verify what he can about the science, the events and the people referenced in the book, but the real question remains - is it just a clever novel or a key to some new physics? Read it and decide for yourself. Then take the next logical step and get a physicist to read it!

Science fiction verging on space opera
By Matt Young
Interesting reading at times, but the book is far too implausible to be taken seriously. It reads kind of like a young-adult novel, in which the kids, against all odds, somehow manage to save the day. The plot, however, has a kernel of science in that it depends on a speculation by Petr Beckmann, who claimed to have debunked Einstein's special theory of relativity and somehow (according to the author of this novel) linked gravitation and electromagnetism.

At any rate, the "kids" in this novel are engineers at a small company, and they use Beckmann's theory to devise an oscillating coil that cancels gravity and allows fantastic mobility with little power consumption. But that is not the implausible part of the book; the implausible part is that a handful of engineers and a bookkeeper, mostly working in their spare time in an empty farmhouse, could actually build a craft that carried two people high into the atmosphere, and they would test it by hopping in and going for a joyride. By comparison, the movie War Games was downright believable.

I think is not giving away too much to reveal that the government tries to prevent their work because of the threat of anti-gravity to the oil and aircraft industries. Now I will not deny that the government is to some extent in collusion with such large industries, but an anti-gravity device! Far from stopping the work, the Pentagon, as Stover conceives it, would have swooped down on them long before they got to the testing phase, seized their computers and their notebooks, and classified the information. Given what other characters in the book know and think, they would never have been allowed to get half as far as they did.

Stover (whom I used to know when we occasionally worked together on optical surface quality) takes as dim a view of university and company politics as of the government, and some of his characters are priceless, if perhaps a bit overdrawn. My feeling was that the book worked in microcosm, and there were some splendid chase scenes, as if the author had a movie contract in mind. But if you look at the overall plot, it just does not work, and the book reminded me of 1940's science fiction novels set in a watery Venus with amphibious venusians pitted against a couple of teenage boys. They are fun, but they are space opera, rather than science fiction. Stover's book is substantially more science-y than space opera, and at times it was good reading, but overall it was unfortunately very hard to take seriously.

Loved it
By Cheryl Moore-Gough
Dr. John Stover takes us on a wild ride from the politics of the board room to the moon and back. Stover's storyline, dealing with the prospect of a new, exciting, and dogma-challenging technology (and those who would suppress the discovery) is clearly and thoughtfully presented as only a professional physicist could handle. The story is not cluttered with excessive explanations of the physics involved, rather, that information is presented in appendices for those who want to read more, so as not to interrupt the flow of the story. An intelligent, exciting, and thought-provoking read!

Very fun, quick paced, and engaging story
By P. O'Hara
Being a "techie" I really enjoy books and movies that have a "let's look at science from a different perspective" bent to them. What Goes Up starts very quickly (which I like) with a suggestion that a fundamental mistake has been made by one of the greatest scientists in history - I'm hooked. The story develops quickly and keeps the reader engaged. Stover's easy going, every man writing style, makes for a very quick read. I hope there's a sequel!
