About the Author

Dr. Robert Gotlin, DO, is the director of orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation in the department of orthopaedic surgery and the coordinator of the musculoskeletal and sports rehabilitation fellowship training program at Beth Israel Medical Center. He is also an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Gotlin hosts the “Dr. Rob Says . . . Sports Health and Fitness Show,” which airs every Saturday from 7 to 8 a.m. on 1050 ESPN Radio. He has been a guest host for television's “ABC Now, Healthy Living,” a daily television program that features breaking medical news and practical health advice. As a consultant, he has served on the medical team with Dr. W. Norman Scott, team physician for the New York Knicks (NBA basketball) and New York Liberty (WNBA basketball), and as physiatric consultant to Dr. Michael Kelly, team physician for the New Jersey Nets (NBA Basketball), and to Dr. Stuart Hershon, team physician for the New York Yankees (MLB baseball). He is also a team physician for U.S. Women's Rugby and the chief medical officer for the JCC Maccabi Games.

Gotlin is board certified by both the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is also the program chairman for the New York State Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Gotlin earned his medical degree from the Southeastern University of the Health Sciences in Miami, Florida, in 1987.

Words from the Masters

Earl Stevick had the uncanny ability to always look at learning from the point of view of the learner, and put things into language that was straightforward, if sometimes a bit unique. The TOC of this volume reads like a who's who? in TESOL, and there are many excellent articles. My favorites are those by Alan Maley, Diane Larsen-Freeman, Donald Freeman, Scott Thorbury and Penny Ur, but they are all good. I find that many of them have to be read two or three times to really get all the juice out of what has been written. Stevick's thought to use the perspective of viewing all the action in the classroom as being "inside," those things going on inside the learners and the teachers mind, and "between," between the learners, and the learners and the teacher, has a lot of resonance. It takes a lot of the complexity of learning-teaching, and makes it more understandable, which is sadly needed in our academic approaches to learning-teaching. The schism between those who believe that the answers come from careful research, and those who rely on the power of narrative comes out here and there is a place for both in the book, and in our search for useful answers. Unfortunately, I felt the need to drop a star since some of the authors seemed to be exploiting an opportunity to get their own ideas published when more could have been said about the power of Stevick's Meaningful Action.

Careful examination of numerous issues, important when Prof. Stevick was active, and still noteworthy today esp. when so many adult students need to acquire some facility in a new language. Also, a limited but interesting treatment of prof. Stevick's own powerful and appealing personality, from several scholars in his own field who knew him well.

After several killings in the same ghastly manner, similar clues are found. Pendergast teams up with Police Officer Vincent D'Agosta, with whom he had worked in The Relic (St. Martin's, 1996), and they begin a lengthy, intense, and time-driven search for the murderer. Along the way, D'Agosta becomes romantically and professionally attached to New York Police Captain Laura Hayward (Reliquary [Tor, 1998]). Their story runs parallel to the investigation and adds another layer of plot. The peculiar nature of Agent Pendergast, who always seems to get out of any kind of dire straits, complements and contrasts with down-to-earth, practical D'Agosta, and they act as catalysts for one another. Da Vinci Code meets Dante's Inferno

Brimstone is the fifth fantastic read from the ingenious Preston and Child duo and it doesn't disappoint. I thought that the book was simply fantastic and extremely delectable, and the moment I finished it I felt a deep hunger to pounce on the next, if I had the sixth book in my possession I have no doubt that I would be unable to leave it alone. Meticulously researched, the novel travels from the streets of New York into the lush and romantic Italy, where Pendergast meets with a nemesis so grand, evil and intense that everyone has little doubt about it being the devil himself. I adore that these books have an aura of enigmatic and mystical proportions, anything is possible and everything somehow has an explanation.

The book is quite long but a lot of things happen and the chases, the intrigue and the clues take up a lot of time, making the entire story feel alive and throbbing with anticipation of what happens next. My favorite literary crush, FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast is fabulous as usual, with plenty of tricks up his sleeves ( literally) and with his senses heightened to take on this hard challenge he takes charge at solving another unusual crime while risking his life. When a famous art critic dies under strange circumstances Pendergast doesn't tale long to start connecting small clues, they form into a cluster of horrifying secrets and involved more people who seem to die in similar fashion before anyone can get to them. There's a connection between the strange, rich people and the hellish ways in which they perished, but the closer they agent gets to the truth the more obstacles appear on his way, seems that not only is the devil out to get him but the mortals involved in protecting the secrets are as ruthless and vicious as they come. His research takes him and former NYPD officer Vincent D'Agosta to monasteries, castles and catacombs of ancient Italians, where the secrets are gravely guarded and finding the truth is tougher than anyone could have expected. I adored the last hundred pages, the tale really took a life of it's own and the ending was stunning, I am worried but hopeful, gah..books such as this one really take me somewhere else, and I can't wait to dive back in.

the very best book these guys ever wrote was The Relic. i loved it. i read it twice. since then i always buy their books because i am looking for another "relic", but it hasn't happened. the books are fun and usually exciting, but not great.

Definitely Holds Your Attention!

Brimstone is a very fast-paced, suspenseful, enjoyable read, but not as good as Relic, Reliquary and The Cabinet Of Curiousities. Nonetheless, Brimstone which reunites FBI Agent Prendergast and former NYPD cop Vincent D'Agosta will grab your attention within the first few pages and not let go until the very last page. Preston and Childs have developed a unique plot in which Prendergast and D'Agosta are involved in trying to solve some murders that are devilsh in nature, or so it seems. In typical Preston/Child fashion, the authors blend science, technology, the supernatural and history in such a way that the result is a highly readble, suspenseful story. My only criticisms, albeit minor, are that the ending is too open-ended paving the way for the authors' next book), and that Prendergast, while an entertaining, memorable character is (for this reader) stretching the limits of credibility. He makes James Bond seem like an amateur. If you have a long flight or vacation coming up, Brimstone is a book that will provide pure escapism and leave you satisfied.

Great source for proof skills.

The reason for my 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has to do more with personal choice than with the quality of the content. For my taste, I rather have more problems to work with than the very few provided here. I would like to give, however, two main reasons as to why I think this is a good book.

1. The content.
It is a good introduction to the properties of numbers. I'm yet to start the last chapter and so far I have learn a great deal on the approximation of irrationals using rational numbers. Also, as explained in chapter 4, its interesting to see how the rational root test can be used in order to see if a given number is rational or not. I remember seeing a trick on my abstract algebra class to justify that cos 20 is not constructible. This very same idea applies to the techniques exhibited here on algebraic numbers.

2. The structure.
Although this book does not offer many problems to work with (in my opinion), it does really well in explaining the theorems. I believe that Niven's approach to explain proofs is excellent for a anyone that is new to proofs. There are also many tricks involved that are worth learning, especially, if you're going into education.

An interesting study of the properties of numbers.

Ivan Niven's lucidly written text discusses the properties of the natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, real numbers, algebraic numbers, and transcendental numbers. He defines the complex numbers but does not delve into their properties. The text is not an axiomatic development of the real numbers. For that, the reader can consult Edmund Landau's text Foundations of Analysis.

Niven assumes the existence of the numbers and explores their properties. He also addresses methods of proof. His text is part of a series (Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library Series) of books published by the Mathematical Association of America intended to be accessible to high school students that explore advanced topics not addressed by the high school curriculum. Accordingly, before Niven proves a result, he discusses how he will prove the result or proves a special case of the result in order to help the reader understand the proof. He also illustrates his results with an abundance of examples.

The material on natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers in the early chapters will be familiar to most readers. In the chapter on real numbers, he proves the existence of irrational numbers. He then explores the properties of irrational numbers and contrasts them with those of the rational numbers. He introduces algebraic and transcendental numbers in a chapter that discusses why certain trigonometric and logarithmic numbers are irrational. In this chapter, Niven appeals to results that he does not prove in order to explain why three famous geometric construction problems from antiquity that are supposed to be solved using only an unmarked straightedge and compass cannot be solved. The final chapters on approximating irrational numbers by rational numbers and the existence of transcendental numbers make extensive use of inequalities. The inexperienced reader may wish to consult the text an Introduction to Inequalities (New Mathematical Library) by Edwin Beckenbach and Richard Bellman before studying the final chapters of Niven's text. Otherwise, these chapters could pose considerable difficulties.

The appendices are well worth reading. In the first appendix, Niven proves there are infinitely many prime numbers; in the second, he proves the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic. The third appendix provides an alternate proof of the existence of transcendental numbers to the one given in the last chapter of the text. The proof in the appendix relies heavily on set theory, so the reader unfamiliar with set theory may wish to consult the text Naive Set Theory (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) by Paul Halmos before tackling it. The final appendix on the irrationality of certain trigonometric numbers, which is a modification of an appendix added to the Russian translation of the book by I. M. Yaglom, provides an alternate approach to that given in the chapter on trigonometric and logarithmic numbers.

The exercises, for which solutions or hints are given at the end of the book, are grounded in Niven's exposition. The reader who has striven to understand his arguments and who has carefully checked their details should find the exercises reasonable.
