Using rich empirical data, including interviews with leading figures in the field, this book brings together martial arts philosophy with an analysis of the technical aspects and the development of taekwondo, and provides a detailed comparison of karate and taekwondo techniques. It debunks nationalistic mythology surrounding taekwondo to provide a reinterpretation of taekwondo’s evolution.

AN EXCELLENT WORK BUT FOR ONE EXCLUSION

This is comprehensive, scholarly work covering the metamorphosis of taekwondo from a traditional martial art to a modern, combat sport. It is well annotated and supported by many citations. Honestly, it is worthy of five stars, but for the obvious exclusion of works by noted American authors, foremost being Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun whose manuals appear at dojangs throughout the world. Grandmasters Seon Duk Son and Henry Cho are referenced liberally, but only one mention of Richard Chun, a contemporary of the former pioneers, in a footnote. Granted, I am a senior student of Grandmaster Chun and, therefore, sensitive to this exclusion. Other than that, this book is detailed, current and thorough. While not for the casual taekwondo enthusiast, I recommend highly to those who drill down deep into the history, culture and philosophy of taekwondo. It is well worth the expense for the taekwondo professional.
