We are what we buy

Annie Leonard's book tells us so much about our world and about, as it says on the cover, the environmental and social impacts of "our obsession with stuff." But it also tells us about who we are and what we think is important. Not preachy or judgmental, Annie creates a new way to think about the choices we make in our own lives and how they connect to everyone and everything. It's really a book about community and how to create one, and how to make choices --both personal and political --that can lead to a healthier, safer and more sustainable world for all of us. Loved the mix of personal stories and analysis and the detailed footnotes and citations. You can read the whole book, or just dip into individual chapters. It's well written and tells a great story. A great read that will make you see the world differently -- and open up many opportunities to make change. My only criticism is that the pages are very dense --would have loved more graphics and white space -- and I don't like the feel of the paper (100% post consumer recycled of course) but I know the author wanted to walk her talk by insisting on the highest possible green standards for publishing. This book picks up where the video leaves off with lots of discussion of solutions and what we can each do to create a more sustainable life for ourselves and the planet. One more thing: this book is not anti-stuff or anti-profit. The message is that life is about more than stuff or profits --that we should honor and appreciate everything we have (Who made those shoes? Where? How did they end up in my closet? Who raised the beef in my hamburger and how? How did it end up on my grill?). And of course businesses need to make money, as do we all. It's just not the only thing that life is about.

You need to know this story!

Annie Leonard and Ariane Conrad bring essential details to light about our stuff!

In this important book I finally caught on to the concept of "real cost." While it is nuts how much stuff people buy that they can't afford the really crazy thing is that we pay nowhere near the real cost of almost anything that we buy. We don't pay to treat the poisoned children in the developing world that have no clean water because of the techniques used in materials extraction, we don't pay for a living wage for the oppressed peoples that manufacture our goods and we certainly don't pay for our goods to be "disposed of" in any kind of a way that would keep more pain and suffering and damage being done.

This isn't a political screed (and don't believe anyone that tells you that it is) -- this is the story of how our very real stuff interacts with millions of people and the environments of nations all over the world. Point being that it is not a story about governments or ideologies. It is about people and materials and how we can make things better.

The book is very well written and has the 'flow' that Annie has when she speaks on her film (which is very good -- google it if you haven't seen it yet) and goes into all the details. It also has a lot of really good stories from Annie's travels all over the world gathering the information that she has put in this book.

Honestly, I think that this is an essential book -- buy it and read it, then make the changes that you'll know you should.

Patient: Know thy self

I heard Al Gore on the evening news once describe the climate change trend as the "Earth has a fever." In her book, The Story of Stuff, I found that Annie Leonard explains -- with sobering, and yet hopeful clarity -- why our planet is overheating from, in part, massive over-consumption by a relatively small part of Earth's human population. Without diminishing the appropriate emphasis on "how are we going to get out of this mess and not just survive, but thrive," the author illuminates the materials cycle, from extraction all the way to the dump. Clive Cussler or Robert Ludlum, it's not, but it kept me interested enough with anecdotes and a sense of humor rarely present in most tomes about how we're screwing ourselves and the 3rd Rock. I was happily surprised, and even energized, by her inclusion of a basic roadmap of sorts for reversing the over-consumption cycle -- one of our species most damaging trends. Here in the U.S., we are at the vanguard of a trajectory that threatens to make us consumers of the world, instead of citizens of the world. WIth more and more power and rights being ascribed to irresponsibly bottom-line-only-focused corporations (witness the recent Supreme Court Citizens United decision), I found the Story of Stuff entirely refreshing with its practically presented idea that I can take charge of my behavior, and increase the quality of my life by shifting how I consume. This is a handbook for crafting a better way of living with ourselves, families, and the Earth. The Story of Stuff would make a great curriculum for K-College students. Beyond the classroom, I hope everyone gets this book and then we can begin to make this important transition together!

The 'must have' book for anyone thinking of exploring the areas surrounding Almaty

This is the 'must have' book for anyone who wants to experience the outstanding beauty and grandeur of the areas around Almaty. I can attest from personal experience that this book, unlike virtually every other resource on this subject, is highly accurate in its descriptions of routes and access. It also contains a highly useful introduction covering key things to know about Almaty, getting around and access to food, equipment, medicines and assistance. It then has separate detailed sections on hikes, camping areas and mountaineering routes and as such is suitable for anyone who wants to experience the great outdoors near Almaty - from those only interested in simple and short outdoor walks and car-based camping all the way to experienced mountaineers who want to climb some of the wonderful peaks in the area. It also covers areas that are suitable for back-country skiing and areas for pure rock-climbing. I particularly liked the detail on different conditions in different seasons, and the author's excellent descriptions of specific dangers on the mountaineering routes.

No maps or drawings

We were so looking forward to this book, but my husband and I were very disappointed to find that it has no maps or drawings. When I plan to go for a hike, I first look at a map of how to get there, then would like to see a drawing or map of the actual hike. This book lists many hikes around Almaty, but not one map or drawing. Having just moved to Almaty and begun to explore the area, we have found that this book doesn't help us. Perhaps after we have been here for a while, it will be useful.

Best Book Published on Radio Drama

I am a PhD student and this book provides the most up to date and well written outline of studying and making radio drama that I can find anywhere in publications. Other books on radio drama are very old (about 20 years). Crook not only does an original media history on the subject which is quite the best scholarship on this subject available, he really inspires you to appreciate this wonderful form of story telling. You get an intellectual/academic theory on things like radio drama writing which is done in a clear style and then you are offered the nuts and bolts of the craft.
The text also modernises all the existing approaches to radio drama. The section on the role of improvised/live radio drama in phone-in programmes and hoaxes is brilliant and original. He also takes a well known BBC radio play 'Spoonface Steinberg' by Lee Hall which I happened to think was one of the best things I have heard in recent years. (It's also available on cassette via Amazon.com) In his writing Crook explains why artistically and from a producer/listener's point of view it was so good and merits attention. But then he subjects it to Cultural Studies analysis and raises the kind of questions which are going to enhance radio drama as an important cultural form of storytelling. This is really critical and thought-provoking.
You will not be disappointed reading this book if you are in to storytelling, radio, radio drama, writing etc.
I checked out the comments by reviewer 'Gwen- Yale University'. But none of the quotes she has in her review appear anywhere in the book.
They are taken from an on-line essay by Crook 'International Radio Drama.' Everybody's entitled to their point of view but I think it is good that mainstream scholars are now recognising African-American radio dramatists such as Richard Durham and centrally rooting their position.
In Radio Drama-Theory and Practice Crook adopts a McLuhanesque line on how audio drama has a future on the Internet and persists as a story-telling presence in commercial production on most radio formats.
There is also a very helpful bibliography which can take you to radio drama texts you may never knew existed.
I would also recommend a book on Radio Acting by Alan Beck which was published 3 years ago. In the past 'British Radio Drama' by Drakakis (Cambridge University Press 1981) is magnificent. Let's hope there are more good books on radio drama coming out.
So my conclusion is read or buy this book and you will not be disappointed.

Theory: yes, practice: no

The book is long on theory and history of radio drama. If you need that, buy it! If you are looking for practical guidance to produce radio drama, only about three of 23 chapters will be of help. But you might find more in its bibliogrpahy. J.

Really Good Value New Look At Radio Drama

I found this book pretty cool because you get an angle on the academic things such as a look at media history through radio or sound plays which takes you right up into the World Wide Web world.
It is also the first book that has explained how to structure a play and juggle the writing of characters with sorting out a plot. I know there are other things around but this book explains it. Suddenly it all clicked.
There is a long section on improvisation in live radio and it kind of bravely suggests that hoaxers on the radio are live dramatists.
I found this book really good value because it does not insult the intelligence of the reader and also it is not full of that academic stuffy kind of writing which sends me to sleep.
Fully recommend it.

Great book

Ronald Blythe is a wonderful writer; it seems he can't write a bad sentence. He uses only as much slang as he needs to spice up a story. My favorite chapter is the one on Jix (Joynson-Hicks), the awful man who became Home Secretary in the Twenties and tried to turn Britain into a moralistic hell. Jix reminds us that a puritan may have fine personal qualities but he ends up making other people suffer. There's also a very fine account of how Edward VIII thought he could manage to marry a twice-divorced American woman and keep his throne. Other characters: Neville Chamberlain, Sir John Reith, Winston Churchill, Stanley Baldwin, many more. A great book.

THE BURNING is the fourth in the western series, A Jess Williams Novel. Along the way, Jess runs into United States Marshal Frank Reedy who asks Jess to detour from hunting the Bolin brothers and help the Marshal deal with a rich rancher, Evan Dwight, who is running out the other small ranchers in the area; and if they don't sell cheap, they end up dead.
Jess again finds himself in a war with dozens of hired guns, but in the end, Jess and Marshal Reedy are still standing, and Evan Dwight ends up in the ground. When that is over, Jess continues on his hunt for the Bolins, and he never stops until he kills every last one of them. To make his job even more difficult, it seems a rich banker from New York City has placed a ten thousand blood bounty on his head because Jess killed his brother, and every hired gun in the west is looking to collect the blood bounty. An exciting, action-packed novel you won't be able to put down.

Burned on The Burning!

Don't get me wrong...I really liked this book, if you can call 144 pages a book, not a novella. I only slightly minded paying as much, or more, than the earlier full sized versions. I enjoyed the stories, enough to buy four of them, but I won't ever buy another one...and this is the reason. I really loathed getting to the end of the last chapter, getting a cliffhanger set up, and actually being told by the author...if you want to know how this turns out, you will have to buy the next book...!!!!! REALLY???

Not acceptable! You expect that kind of thing when it says, "read here for an excerpt from the next book". To use a blatant set up, to try to force your reader to buy another book, is poorly done, no matter how interesting the book is! I truly regret not continuing this series. As I said, I really liked them, and loved the unusual subplot about the gun and holster! I just will not allow any author, no matter how good he or she thinks they are, to jack me around like that in a book I payed for. And, FYI Mr. Thomas, $3.99 for 144 pages still equals the full price for a full length book...no deal here, so no excuses for your poor personal standards!

Disappointing

I have read four of this authors books. This one is # 4 and is quite similiar to the second book. The first three books were quite good because they were a natural progression through this 16 year old bounty hunter life. However when this one was read I was disappointed to know that the plot was not unique.

Mr. Thomas is a better than average writer. I was a little disappointed to see that this principled young man of such a young age had to be engaged in a night of pleasure with a woman. This side light did not add to the plot.

All in all books 1-3 were above average. This one is not.

Absolutely love this western,writer reminds me of the
old Louis L'Amour novels with a modern twist. It's a
rough road to travel when your a western writer now
days and it's great to see another great western writer
on the scene. With the price you pay for this Kindle
book it's just a outright steal.

Poorly edited and a bit tedious, but some good information

First off, I must say that the copy of the book I have has the word "DRAFT" stamped inside the front and back cover, so it is possible that some editing has been done to the book since my copy was printed in 2010.

I really wanted to like this book, but I struggled to get through it. It took me weeks, as well as some prodding from my upline, to finally get to what I would consider the "good stuff". I understand the need to expound upon your experience and achievements so that you can establish yourself as an expert, or at least demonstrate you do have knowledge that will be worthwhile to your readers. However, the first several chapters of this book feel far more like a lengthy "Please be impressed with all the stuff I used to do" resume than a "Let me show you how to start and run a successful essential oil business" guide. Others may be more interested in this than I am; however, I personally don't get a lot of benefit from hearing what recognition the author has received in the telecommunications field or how many people wanted to buy her business plan.

What I find most helpful and interesting are specific ideas on marketing, prospecting and overall operation of the business, and fortunately there are some ideas and strategies provided in the book. At times it is rather vague: (page 119) "Take some ideas from marketing you have seen that appeals to you. Figure out how you will be able to implement your marketing ideas and be creative. Add your own personal touch." While this is a good idea, "figure out how you will be able to implement it" doesn't give me a lot of direction on how to go about it. Some information also seems a bit contradictory; after having just explained why we shouldn't feel guilty earning commission on the products we sell to our friends, the author then suggests we should be giving our friends "thank you gifts" when they buy. There are not a lot of examples given in the book of how other people are working their business. Those that are given are usually about people who are doing it "wrong" and how they cannot grow their business that way. It would be helpful to me to have more examples of people doing it "right" and how they are achieving their results.

What I found most beneficial were the various checklists, the chapter on utilizing business tools and the ideas for expanding into new markets. There is helpful information on holding events and what to do at a trade show, a bit on sales and objections. For my own personal taste, I would have preferred less detail on what author has accomplished and what she intends to teach us, and much more detail in the instruction and advice on how to do it. However, I'm sure the book will hold value for many readers, particularly if they can stick with it and get all the way to the end.

Must Read BUSINESS BOOK that works for the Essential Oil world!

Very happy with this purchase! Finally a business book that is specific to the essential oil industry. This is EXACTLY the book I have been looking for. I love the fact that there are workbook activities within the book to help develop a business plan, networking events, training and tools to work smarter not harder. It's definitely worth your time and money. I say to my YL down line, "it's like a personal coach/ workshop in an easy to read book!" I also love the do's and dont's section.

It feels like a custom made guide to help create an essential oil business and make money while doing it. I'm so happy someone finally brought it all together. I have a dozen other books collecting dust because either it's a business book that doesn't relate to essential oils or it's an essential oil books that doesn't touch on how to create a business instead focuses on how to use the oils. My Young Living business has grown exponentially and I use this book as part of my training when a new person is added to my down line. Enjoy and good luck!

Sooooooooo disappointing

I ordered this book after reading the previous reviews. After reading half the book I already figured out that those reviews were probably written by someone connected to the author or publisher. This book mentions almost nothing about the essential oil business. I expected to learn about buying from suppliers, grades, best way to package it, ways to mix it for different uses and things of that nature. Instead I got tips like sending monthly flyers to my previous customers and giving some of my oil to a massage therapist to use on me to spark their interest. It was all about repping for companies like selling avon. I'm going to remember this publisher so that I will never buy another book of their's again, someone there had to read this book before they agreed to publish it. This book was sooooooooo useless and a waste of time and money. Soooooooooo wrong.
