About the Author
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island, in 1874. Her first novel, "Anne of Green Gables" (1908), was followed by more than twenty others. Long after her death, in 1942, she remains one of Canada's most beloved writers.

Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis, Missouri, In 1851. She began writing shortly after herHusband's death and, from 1889 until her ownDeath, her stories and other miscellaneousWritings appeared in Vogue, Youth's companion, Atlantic Monthly, Century, Saturday EveningPost, and other publications. In addition to The Awakening, Mrs. Chopin published another novel, At Fault, and two collections of short stories and sketches, Bayou Folk and A Night at Acadie. The publication of The Awakening in 1899 occasioned shocked and angry response from reviewers all over the country. The book was taken off the shelves of the St. Louis mercantile library and its author was barred from the fine arts club. Kate Chopin died in 1904.

A light, enjoyable read for fans of love stories of the Victorian era

Missed Chances is a collection of five short stories that all feature themes of love and loss. The book was edited by M.R. Nelson and the authors include L.M. Montgomery, Kate Chopin, Rabindranath Tagore, Helen Hunt Jackson and Constance Fenimore Woolson. What is unique about this book is that although all of the writers lived in the 1800s, their stories are still relevant and have stood the test of time. They are heartwarming, melancholic, with just enough humor to keep it lighthearted (Aunt Philippa, I’m looking at you).

Speaking of Aunt Philippa, she is by far my favorite character in the book. She’s a man-hating woman and an absolute riot to read. Her simple explanation of “that’s the men for you” for every undesirable situation that arises with the opposite sex is funny to say the least. I don’t want to give too much away but there’s a cute twist at the end that I rather enjoyed. Bonus: the story takes place in PEI, which isn’t too far from my corner of the world.

The stand out story for me is The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore. As silly as it may sound, it reminds me of a rap battle gone wrong between two poets (read it – you’ll know what I mean) which obviously wasn’t how the author intended it when he wrote it back in the 19th century but for some reason that’s how I imagine the scene would go down if it happened in today’s day and age. Rap battle aside, Shekhar’s decision at the end reminds us that it’s important to never give up as we don’t know what the future holds. Sure, the ending is sad but then who doesn’t love a good love tragedy?

I’m really happy that the publishing company, Annorlunda Books, approached me to review this book. I wasn’t familiar with any other the authors and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to discover their work. Some stories I liked better than others, but overall it was a pleasant read. The book may not cater to everyone depending on taste however if you’re a fan of romantic tales from the Victorian era, pick up Missed Chances – you’re sure to enjoy it.

An enjoyable compilation of short stories

This is the first of Annorlunda Books' Taster Flights and consists of 5 stories in the public domain, edited by M.R. Nelson.
It's a very nice compilation of short stories with the common theme of what might have been and, as promised in the introduction, the stories play up one another nicely. The darker, heavier fare is sandwiched between the sunnier, lighter pieces.

"Aunt Philippa and the Men" by L.M. Montgomery opens the collection, and is a quick, engaging, funny read. It was written in first person from the standpoint of a young woman who seems real and relatable. You will love both her and her Aunt Philippa.
"The Kiss" by Kate Chopin is short, cynical, and delightful.
"The Victory" by Rabindranath Tagore employs stylistic elements that I probably did not appreciate as much as others might and I felt it was perhaps a misfit for this collection.
"The Mystery of Wilhelm Ruetter" by Helen Hunt Jackson was the most difficult one to read. The writing would be considered quite cumbersome by modern standards and the phonetic transcription of the characters' broken English with a thick German accent did not help.
"The Florentine Experiment" by Constance Fenimore Woolson was quite enjoyable to read. It will be a treat for the fans of Jane Austen.

Apart from Tagore's story, this collection also offers a nice window into the portrayal of women by North American female writers in the 1800's, some of whom were willing and able to write about real female characters, with agency and a range of thoughts and feelings. Those characters stand strong and appealing today.

This book was a beautiful combination of a number of popular loves stories. I needn't tell you whether or not this book was good...because all of the stories in the book are quite popular (for a reason). I found that the stories complemented each other very well. I'm not really into 18th century love stories, so I can't say that I would for-sure read this book again....but if you're into stories like that, or are wishing to test the waters, pick up Missed Chances.

The second volume from Hanson and Holloway keeps up the standard

This is the second volume of a planned multi-volume history focusing on UFO-related phenomena from the British Isles, the first serious and organized attempt at this major undertaking. This volume covers the period 1960-64, and there's a lot of material. The authors/compilers of the series are police officer John Hanson and his partner Dawn Holloway, with many other researchers credited as contributors of material.

The introduction this time is penned by Jenny Randles, with a brief note from the late, delightfully straight-talking (some would say curmudgeonly) Admiral of the Fleet Lord Hill Norton, once head of NATO, about the UFO issue and its impact on officialdom.

As with the first volume the authors have done an excellent job of detailing cases, meticulously sorting wheat from chaff.

The large-format paperback with magazine-style layout is carried over from the first volume, and this one comes in at just over 290 pages. David Sankey again supplies illustrations where relevant and useful. One interesting revelation is that large black triangular craft, with a light near each point of the triangle and one in the centre, were reported as far back as 1964 in British skies and this distinctive shape did not originate with the wave of sightings of identically described phenomena over Belgium in 1990.

Again thousands of sightings and encounters have probably been excluded because only what has been reported can be investigated and recorded.

As with the first volume the text is literate, free of typos and obviously edited to a professional standard (why can't all works in this field be so good in this area?). Let's look forward to volume three.

The grammatical relations of subject and object are required in the case of the Indian language of Kannada. Furthermore, the notion of transitivity or transference which forms the basis for postulating grammatical relations does not play the expected central role in all languages: in the case of another Indian language, Manipuri, it is volitionality and transitivity which plays the central role in clause structure. Dr. Bhat argues against the universality and necessity of grammatical relations; his provocative hypothesis will be a challenge to all those concerned with the nature of language.

It adds to the extant literature on human trafficking in the United States by presenting a case study that examines forced labor and sexual exploitation in the Midwest. Finally, the book recognizes that anti-trafficking efforts are a combination of community leaders, social service providers, and legal groups focused on identifying and assisting victims of trafficking while, at the same time, reducing trafficking through education and prosecution.

This is excellent, scholarly, qualitative research on a topic that has not been adequately investigated. The in-depth interviews of practitioners in the field of human sex-trafficking - counselors, police officers, and victims - is compelling. Also, the analysis of immigrant labor trafficking is important because of under-reporting of the situation due to fear of deportation.
