Freehand trompe l'oeil can be quite a challenging undertaking, but using stencils to achieve a similar effect makes the process more approachable. Rounded or dimensional forms can be made to look quite convincing with the right shading and color gradations, and the use of multiple overlays facilitates a more three-dimensional look than does single-step stenciling. Unfortunately, this book is a fairly dull presentation on what could be an exciting and lively technique. The author explains some basic stenciling principles, with brief discussions of cutting and coloring multistep stencils, then offers a series of "projects" that are in fact not step-by-step directions but more general coverage of how to paint such standard fare as bowls of fruit, candlesticks, trailing vines, plates on shelves, and architectonic motifs. Her colors are often either too muddy or a bit garish, and her renderings frequently unconvincing. And although each finished design is illustrated in color, it simply floats on the page, rather than in some context of a room or a piece of furniture, leaving readers entirely on their own to imagine how to transplant the images off the page and into their homes. --Amy Handy

Good pics, terrible text, inadequate instructions

In spite of the name of the author, this book does not seem to have been written by an English speaker. It appears to have been translated from Italian, judging by the frontispiece, and the translation is infuriatingly bad. (As is the 2nd book just out from this author.) The instructions are totally inadequate. People who can already paint/stencil can follow the pics which are good, but all in all I'd class this as a very sloppy effort. It really annoyed me.

It is a book u would like to own. Contains step by step stencling instructions & very good illustrations too. Painting instructions like overlaying & many beautiful designs have been provided in the back of the book. THis book has also covered the 3D stenciling with attractive designs & innovative ideas. U can just paint every where u want to.

Classic Sci-Fi Storytelling by a talented author

Well written with engaging, fully developed main characters. Pacing is good and the plot keeps you turning (swipping?) the pages to find out what's going to happen next. This author is obviously skilled as both a writer and a storyteller. So it is disappointing to know that Chris Mead is no longer with us and there will be no sequel or other books from this author.

Interesting but a little flawed

The author had some excellent ideas and interesting aliens, but was let down by the lack of proof-reading and some really bad errors in spelling, grammar, and misused words. A good professional edit would make a huge difference.

The ending left me wanting more; I assume this was intended to be a series.

Good universe. Good characters. I particularly liked how the exposition was spread throughout the novel Good patience and pacing. Loved the Tallis. Female protagonists a bit 13 year old male fantasy skeleton. Worth the investment overall.

I read The Place of Mind for a university philsophy course. I found the book to be a good introduction to various theories of mind. The articles cover a number of areas, including Dualism, materialism, subjectivity and AI. I recommend the book to anyone who is looking for a good overview of theory of mind.

A Total Steal

I was completely surprised when I saw this at Barnes and Noble today, and even more so when I looked at its contents. For $25 you get 40 high quality posters for all of the major Assassin's Creed games. Here's a short break-down of each one.

-18 Black Flag posters (a majority of them star Edward, but there's some great concept art pieces and a decent amount of the supporting cast).
-12 Assassin's Creed 3 posters (including the Tyranny of King Washington and Aveline).
-3 for Revelations
-3 for Brotherhood
-1 for Assassin's Creed 2 (which is a bit of a shame, imo)
-4 for Assassin's Creed 1
-1 starring Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, Aveline, and Nikolai Orelov (from The Fall and The Chain).

(No Desmond posters D:)

They're approximately 12" by 15.5", and are double-sided, so if you want to hang up multiples you may run into a tough decision.

But overall, you absolutely cannot beat what you're getting for the price. I hope they continue to do a second edition with AC5 and beyond.

Exceeds expectations.... wonderful gor any AC fan

Let me just start by saying this is awesome! I expected it to be good quality but when I got it it really exceeded my expectations. The color and image quality is outstanding and all posters are printed on cardstock-like material. I expected them to be on plain glossed poster paper. I do wish there were more posters from AC2 but since I am a fan of the entire series its not a big problem. The posters are printed front & back so if there are two on the same page you like... You may have trouble deciding. Great product and it would make a great gift for any Assassin's Creed fan.

My son really likes the poster collection (as do I). The only "complaint" is the fact that they are double-sided simply because he has trouble picking between some of them. Really nice collection though and would recommend for any AC fans :)

Convection heat transfer made "streamlined"

With this book, Bejan makes convection heat transfer "streamlined". Powerful --yet simple and handy-- tools such as constructal theory, scale analysis, intersection of asymptotes method, heatlines, etc., are presented and used in the book to provide readers with a deep understanding of how and why things are happening the way they are. The author's viewpoint on the field is refreshing and original. This is the one book that I would recommend to graduate students interested in convection heat transfer.

Excellent complement to classic heat transfer texts

I never got around to buying this textbook, but I did borrow the 2nd edition of this text from my convection professor as I was studying for the ph.d. prelim exam this last Spring. I read through much of this book very thoroughly and developed some strong feelings on the quality of the text. I feel Professor Bejan, in writing this book, assumed the readers had some background in the subject (or were mathematically curious on their own to fill in many of the gaps he left). I say this because Prof. Bejan is often very brief in the derivation of equations and simply states in words what must be done to manipulate governing equations into the forms he presents. Though this may even be a pedagogical tool of his. Nothing proves his point better than having to go through the math on your own and matching what he's said will happen. Though getting stuck on some small mathematical simplification is very frustrating for someone new to the subject and for that reason alone, this book should almost necessarily be accompanied by with some other classical convection textbook (i.e. Burmeister's Convective Heat Transfer, 2nd Edition, Kays & Crawford's MP for Convective Heat & Mass Transfer, or even Incropera & Dewitt's Introduction to Heat Transfer).

But for what Prof. Bejan might be lacking in the derivations, he makes up for in stunningly clear insight and unbeatable discussions that he arrives at (often through his scaling treatments -- more than once during my prelim exam I found myself quoting the scaling analysis from his chapter on natural convection). Prof. Bejan has a unique philosophy on engineering mathematics and it is, like I've said already, a truly excellent complement to everything else I've read on the subject of convection heat transfer. I don't think this text is suitable for reference in an undergraduate class or for one who needs an introduction to the conservation laws. But any graduate student with a focus in heat transfer owes themselves to find a copy of this text and read through it.
