About the Author

Eric Shiraev is a professor, researcher, and author. He took his academic degrees at St. Petersburg University in Russia and completed a post-doctoral program in the United States at UCLA. He served at various positions at St. Petersburg University, NVCC, Oregon State University, George Washington University, and George Mason University. His research interests are diverse. He is an author, co-author, and co-editor of twelve books and numerous publications in the fields of global studies, history of science, cross-cultural studies, and political psychology. In his publications, he develops a distinct multi-disciplinary approach to analyze human behavior. Dr. David A. Levy has extensive experience as a teacher, therapist, writer, and researcher. He is Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology, where he has been teaching graduate courses since 1986. He received his B.A. degree in theater arts from UCLA, a M.A. degree in psychology from Pepperdine University, a second M.A. degree in psychology from UCLA, and his Ph.D. in psychology from UCLA, where he specialized in social psychology, with minors in psychological assessment and personality psychology. He served as Visiting Professor of Psychology in the Soviet Union, where he delivered lectures and workshops in psychology and psychotherapy at Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University, the Leningrad Academy of Science, and the Bekhterev Psychoneurological Institute. He was honored as a Harriet and Charles Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Pepperdine, and was a recipient of the Shepard Ivory Franz Distinguished Teaching Award and Charles F. Scott Fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Levy holds professional licenses both in psychology and in marriage and family therapy. He has worked in a wide range of private practice and inpatient psychiatric settings, he has supervised clinical interns, and he has utilized his expertise in psychological testing (particularly the MMPI) in forensic cases.

    His numerous theoretical and empirical research studies have been published in scientific journals and presented at professional conferences. His book, "Tools of Critical Thinking: Metathoughts for Psychology," garnered widespread acclaim in both academic and clinical settings for its innovative approaches to improving thinking skills. Levy co-authored (with Eric Shiraev) "Cross-Cultural Psychology: Critical Thinking and Contemporary Applications," which became an internationally best-selling textbook. Levy is the author of "Family Therapy: History, Theory, and Practice," which was the first textbook on the topic available to Russian readers. His Levy Optimism-Pessimism Scale (LOPS) has been utilized internationally in a variety of research contexts, and he is a member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of Humanistic Psychology.

Levy is also the author of numerous satirical articles, including "The Emperor's Postmodern Clothes: A Brief Guide to Deconstructing Academically Fashionable Phrases for the Uninitiated," "How to Be a Good Psychotherapy Patient," "Psychometric Infallibility Realized: The One-Size-Fits-All Psychological Profile," "Stinks and Instincts: An Empirical Investigation of Freud's Excreta Theory," and "A Proposed Category for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM): Pervasive Labeling Disorder."

    As a media consultant, Levy has appeared on dozens television and radio broadcasts (including CNN, CBS, NBC, PBS, A&E, and E!), providing psychological perspectives on current events, and examining issues and trends in the mental health fields. He has also worked as a professional director, producer, writer and actor in motion pictures, television and stage. He received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Network Television Series, and he was a guest star on the television series "Cheers," where he portrayed the leader of Frasier's low self-esteem group.

Invaluable textbook for cross-cultural psychology instructors

This text has become an invaluable tool for the courses I teach in cross-cultural psychology, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although many books purport to emphasize the integration of critical thinking skills with cross-cultural psychology, this is the only one that does so successfully. My students consistently rate it favorably, and I give it my highest recommendation.

So refreshing to find a book about cultural diversity that isn't rife with politically correct mumbo-jumbo. This text emphasizes using critical thinking tools to incisively see through the fog of current academic and social fads and fashions.

Wow, I read this book and then immediately bought one for my sister who is majoring in Psych. This is a great book for anyone (student or otherwise) who is interested in examining the concepts of cross-cultural psychology, its research methods, and how effects of culture influences behavior, development and disorders. This book is easy to comprehend and the exercises are very insightful. Psych books can be dry...this one is very engaging and entertaining!

A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum

Have you ever read a short story and wished it was a full length novel? That is how I felt after completing "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure." Short and sweet at 43 pages, Candice Hern has introduced characters that I instantly loved and wanted to know more about. What grabbed me so immediately you ask? The humor and effervescent theme.

In this brief format an author must use every word and sentence to advance the narrative quickly to its conclusion. Hern wastes no time by introducing the two main characters in an outrageous and humorous way: our hero, the Earl of Evesham, is test driving his new curricle down Park Lane in London and spies a young woman perched in a tree attempting to make her way over a fence. Caught by her skirts on a branch, she is prevented from progressing and literally up a tree! The unusual sight of a finely dressed woman in such a predicament is quite intriguing to the lord, but the fact that she is attempting to escape from the garden of the royal owner that he was appointed to meet the next day to make a formal offer for his daughter's hand is even more interesting. It is an arranged marriage since his boyhood and he has not seen his future fiancé since she was a child. Could this pretty young lady be his intended? No. It was highly unlikely that Lady Ann of Gloucester, daughter of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and niece to the king would be dangling from a tree in the fashionable Mayfair district. Was she instead a housebreaker escaping with the family silver? Who could this "adorable sprite" be?

She quickly shares that she is running away from her life--for a day--her last day of freedom before her life changes forever and she sacrifices herself to the "altar of duty." That cinched it. She was his intended. He offers to help her down on one condition: that he be allowed to escort her on her adventure. She agrees and an unlikely alliance begins: and before it's merry conclusion we are take on a grand spree through several amusing sites in Regency London: to Hyde Park to watch a balloon accent, to Black Friars Bridge to eat oysters, to Ludgate Hill to admire the shops where he buys her perfume, to Pasternoster Row to browse print and book shops where he purchases The Picture of London for 1802, Being a Correct Guide to all of the Curiosities, Amusements, Exhibitions, Public Establishments and Remarkable Objects in and near London, for the use of Stragers, Foreigners, and all Persons who are not acquainted with the British Metropolis. In short, a tourist guide book! She is delighted with all that she experiences, and most importantly him.

Assuming a name to hide his true identity and the connection to her family, along the way they inadvertently run across his friends who want to meet this pretty young lady; one even thinks she is his new ladybird! But, he is determined to keep up the ruse. "As the day progressed and he'd grown increasingly fond of her, even a little infatuated, he'd begun to feel a tad guilty at his deception. Even so, he was oddly reluctant to give it up. He was enjoying himself too much." And so are we.

What a fun romp through some unusual sites in London that the Ton may not have frequented - and that was the point. Lady Ann wanted to experience life of the common man; to see their entertainments and live her life as a commoner in one day. Lord Evesham is a capable and charming guide, enjoying her wide-eyed amazement with a fresh perspective and a growing appreciation for the woman who would hopefully become his wife. But now how will he ever transition into the earl who she is pledged to marry, and will she be too angry and embarrassed to accept him when she discovers his deception?

A delightfully breezy and upbeat glimpse at two aristocrats playing hooky from duty and decorum, "Lady Ann's Excellent Adventure" is all that its title promised. It is Roman Holiday meets Georgette Heyer and I could not be more enchanted with this reverse fairytale of two strangers who climb down from the their high perch and enjoy the simple life and each other without inhibitions or preconceived assumptions. I was so captivated by each of the protagonists that I did not want their story to end. Like the conclusion of the delightful movie Roman Holiday, they do have to face the reality of their return to royalty, but their lives will never be burdened with regret.

Unusual Circumstances and Coincidences

How many of us have gone on holiday or an outing and either responded to or made some trivial comment to a stranger, and after spending some time together realized we'd found a soulmate and ended up wondering what might have been? It was like that for Annie after she met Will under rather unusual circumstances and spent the day with him. For Will, the coincidence of meeting Annie his bethrothed since she was six years of age, without her knowing who he was became the perfect opportunity to find out who she really was. You will love meeting Lady Ann, daughter of a Royal Duke, during two encounters with her maid. The first one will have you muttering, "Well, I never!" and the second one will have you doing fist pumps. On the one hand, I agree this love story is way too short. On the other hand, I like the way it's all rather surreal until she sees her betrothed for the first time. Very nicely done. Knowing Lady Ann, she eschewed the title Princess and compromised with Lady when she realized how differently she was treated from everyone else.

Very sweet and fun

I found this a very sweet story. The Princess Ann (minor royalty) sneaks out of her enormous house and a gentleman - luckily, a good one and even more luckily, the one she's supposed to be betrothed to - happens to see her stuck in a tree. So he takes her out driving and to see a balloon ascension and to wander around all over Regency London without telling her who he is. So it's a bit Roman Holiday. I really liked the way they got to know each other by having fun together (though I got a bit mad at him for not telling her who he was).

And yes, I agree - it's too short! I can hardly wait until Hern starts writing full-length novels again (hint hint)

Written for analysts who have at least some previous experience with data warehousing, Microsoft OLAP Solutions provides a working guide to analyzing legacy data with the new Microsoft online analytical processing (OLAP) Services. This book assumes you understand the fundamentals of what data warehousing is and how it works; if you do, this guide masterfully presents the strengths (and limitations) of OLAP technology.

Database (DB) analysts know that Microsoft OLAP is the proverbial new kid on the block when it comes to data warehousing. It offers good wizards and tools to simplify creation and maintenance of a data warehouse. While the authors of Microsoft OLAP Solutions dutifully explain some of the technical terminology related to OLAP (like cubes and dimensions) and design, many readers will likely seize on the chapters that examine actually using OLAP wizards and tools for building warehouses. Moreover, the reference to MDX (OLAP's data-analysis language) will be invaluable here.

OLAP for the elite

This book is for programmers with substantial experience with OLAP tools with syntactical development capabilities. Experienced programmers who may not have used OLAP technology but who have a good grasp of advanced technical issues related to report generation will benefit from the book too.
The book is written in a dense academic style with poor organization. (You will see this right away in their first chapter when they start discussing more esoteric design issues while giving the reader minimal context as to why they bring up these points at that time.) However, the authors know their stuff so readers experienced in the areas just described will be able to muddle through.
As a side note, this book is fascinating in a way the authors may not have intended. Microsoft, in this person's opinion, has been quite successful in selling developer technology (e.g., Visual Basic, SQL Server, Access) where a developer with a small to medium amount of knowledge of the specific technology can go pretty far without "plateauing". This book, which is subtly critical of the product, describes a product where that plateau is hit relatively quickly. It is very odd that an OLAP product, which most developers will not use every day, is designed this way. Similarly, this design rules out this tool as something for the non-IT "power user" to use for developing anything more than relatively simple applications. - Anyway, it would have been very useful if the authors would have been more overt in their criticism of the product. Yes, it might have been biting a hand that's feeding them but in the long run it would strengthen the technology.

Essential (and I mean Essential) reading!

Warehousing has been around for years, but many professionals will be interested in the new Microsoft OLAP cubes for ultimate performance. This book clearly and unambiguously describes what they are, how to design them and then (most importantly at this time) how to use them. For traditional data warehouse professionals, the idea of an OLAP cube may not be easy to grasp - I teach the Microsoft official courses on the subject and it never comes easy to the student. However, this book does a good job of explaining the concepts of Dimensions, Measures, Facts, Members, etc.. If, like another reviewer has said, you have to re-read the material, then I'm not surprised - this is more to do with the new concepts than with how the authors explain it. If, like another reviewer, you know what a star-schema/snowflake schema is, then you should find this book pretty straight-forward. There are some errors in the exercises, but the technical text is the best around (including anything that has come out of Microsoft!). A match for the MDX Sections cannot be found anywhere else at this point in time. I gave the book 4 out of 5 because of the errors in the examples. However, if you're really going to use OLAP Server then your own data will be much more appropriate for practising with anyway - don't let the few errors put you off. Buy it. Read it. Use it!

Great book from the gurus

This book is what you really want if you are serious about developing using Microsoft Analysis Services. Today with Microsoft Analysis Services ranking as the most widely implemented OLAP/analysis solution this is the best source to get started on Microsoft OLAP services from none other than Erik Thomsen the OLAP guru and George Spofford. The authors were kind enough to answer readers queries by email that makes a big difference to somebody getting into a new technology. The book points the strengths and limitations thereby preparing you to have workarounds for the limitations. I rate 5 stars for the completeness, presentation, honesty and responsiveness of the authors. They do not try to sell a product to you but provide the technology - a very small breed you find these days you will bang your head for days with a product for a limitation that was not known and later learn to live with it but here you know upfront what they are and how to avoid them through proper design and implementation. My only request to the authors when Microsoft SQL Server - Yukon the next major release of SQL Server which will be available in 3 months time will redefine and make SQL Server more stronger in database, OLAP, ETL & data mining segments I would appreciate if the authors post a electronic appendixes to the book to explain the new features in Analysis services and MDX in the new release of SQL Server.

Captivating

I first read an excerpt of this book in one of the Sunday papers about a month ago. I had a vague recollection of Vanessa and her story as I was a teenager at the time her arrest made the news. After reading the excerpt, I was immediately interested in this story as I am with all stories about drug mules.
Before buying the book I watched Vanessa being interviewed in one of the local talk shows. I was not particularly impressed by the interview because I found that Vanessa did not articulate her story well and she also seemed blasé (I suppose that could happen if you retell a story over and over). From the interview I also found out that the book is not actually written by Vanessa herself but by someone else. Immediately I had doubts on whether the story would be well and sincerely captured.
Thankfully my initial curiosity got the better of me and I bought the book. I bought this on my Kindle whilst at the airport waiting to board a flight. This made the first two chapters of the book relatable.
I am not half way through the book yet but I'm glad to say the book has a sincere and authentic tone. It is truly an intriguing story and it is captured well. I had so many questions about Felix and his involvement in this. I got very emotional during the moments she seeks for Felix to rescue her.
I cannot wait to finish reading.
It is worth buying and it is definitely worth reading.

Fantastic Book and a life lesson to all

This is the sad and enlightening story of Vanessa Goosen. In 1993 she was a young 21 year old South African beauty queen and business woman. She had loving boyfriend whom she adored, and they were expecting a baby. Felix (the boyfriend) and her co owned a clothing boutique, and the business flourished. Little did she know was that a business trip to Bangkok, Thailand was going to change her life forever.

Felix had sent her to Bangkok to take advantage of the latest merchandise being offered there. Whilst there she met a friend of Felix, Jackson, who introduced himself to her at her hotel. He gave her some engineering notebooks requesting them to be delivered to his brother back in South Africa. After inspecting the pages, she obliged. Tired and exhausted from the trip and morning sickness, she was extremely anxious to return home especially to return into the Felix's arms. At the airport security check point, her world came crashing down when a security guard uncovered 1.7 kg of heroin in the spine of the notebooks given to her. Despite her protests of innocence she is jailed, the Thai officials couldn't do anything to track down Jackson as they believe that he used a fake name so that he won't be traced. With this information she realises that she was used as a drug mule, and for being caught was going to suffer the consequences. Drug trafficking in Thailand carries a mandatory death sentence, this charge was commuted to life in prison because of Goosen's pregnancy.

The book's main achievement in my opinion was its ability to evoke a sense of empathy from the reader to Goosen's situation, she was duped into carry illegal drugs and then she had to suffer the consequences for that. Thai prison is not a holiday camp. The ambience of isolation, controlled environment, adjusting to a foreign culture and other struggles is enough to drive one to suicide. To make things worse for her during the first few weeks in prison, initially evasive, Felix abandons her for another woman. Goosen explained that if it was not for her daughter Felicia, she wouldn't have had the will to go on living, fighting for her freedom and redeeming her name. When Felicia was old enough she made the choice to get her childhood best friend, Melanie to adopt her. It was either that, or the orphanage. Thanks to the efforts of strong willed lawyer, family, friends and well wishers who have heard about her situation, also kept her strong throughout the ordeal. Eventually after a 16 year struggle she was freed, and finally returns home. Adjusting to life back home was no easy feat either, adjusting to the new political system (she missed the first democratic elections held in 1994), technology and most importantly rebuilding her relationship with her teenage daughter.

This book provides a big life lesson to us all, especially for those who travel and for those who are considering becoming drug mules. You can't always depend your country's government to intervene. I was almost in a similar incident in Hong Kong when a woman I never met tried to get me to help her with a parcel. Glad I refused.

I think that this was an honest and horrifying account of a Thailand prison experience. In the days where drug trafficking is becoming more and more common, I think books like these are a must. I do believe the author is innocent....I did NOT believe Shelby Corby was... Innocent or not these stories must be told to keep other young people from making the same mistakes.

Loved book 2!

I love the author. I read the first book and the second is off the chain. Good story line about Edward and Reeves relationship. It was well developed. A father, Edward with a career. His future wife had aspirations. Both individual had baggage that needed to be dealt with. Edward had a child, Ella who was unplanned but when she arrived, Ella became his world. This story highlighted joint parenting can be done for the good of the child. The couple also took the time to get to know each other. Great positive story! Can't wait to read book 3, will it be Ethan's story?

Love at First sight

I'm sure that it is possible to fall in love when you first see your soul mate, but I didn't go down that fast like Edward and Reeve. I had a rough time believing it, but I must say I was convinced with their story. It's sad that Reeve had to deal with a tragedy in her young life. I even felt bad for Amber. Looking forward to Ethan and Sofia's story.

Getting over the death of a loved one is always hard, but falling instantly in love with another person makes the guilt compound! Edward made a very hard but true decision and followed his heart! Reeve had to find herself in order to follow her heart! Their journey is beautifully told!
